CSA B56 - Power Engineering - Facility Rating and Staffing

The Safety Codes Council of Alberta (SCCA), along with eight contributing parties, including Manitoba, collaborated to support the creation of a national standard for Power Engineering Plant Staffing and Plant Rating.

To facilitate this, the SCCA engaged the Standards Council of Canada (SCC), which then selected the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) to develop the standard. Following consultations, CSA formed a technical committee composed of subject matter experts from all jurisdictions across Canada.

This resulted in the development of a new standard, CSA B56:25 - Power Engineering – Facility Rating and Staffing, aimed at promoting uniform, coordinated, and consistent administration and enforcement of classification, rating, and supervision requirements for the safe management and operation of boilers and refrigeration facilities.

At present, no jurisdiction has adopted or implemented this standard for Power Engineer staffing. However, the goal is for this standard to be eventually adopted across Canada.

On behalf of CSA, we would like to announce that the public review for the proposed new standard CSA B56:2025 is live, and we welcome your review and comments.

The public review period is 60 days and will close on October 20, 2024.

Please feel free to share this communication with other interested parties to allow for their review of the draft standard and submission of their comments though the public review process.

The intent of public review is to receive and review comments from those who did not participate in the standards development as a part of the CSA committee.
